Micah Wilkes Smedberg
Suzanne and I are pleased to announce the birth of Micah Wilkes Smedberg, born 3 February, 2007 at 1:34 p.m. (EST). All are happy and healthy.
This is our fourth child, but our first boy. For those interested, take a look at Ellie, Claire, and Abbey‘s birth announcements.
I will be taking two weeks of paternity leave. While I may not be able to stay away from email entirely, I won’t be actively engaged in Mozilla activities. Here are some alternate contact points while I am away:
- Build system
- Ted Mielczarek (luser) or Mark Mentovai (mento)
- Firefox partner builds
- Dan Mills (v_thunder)
- Toolkit
- Gavin Sharp (gavin) or Mike Connor (mconnor)
- Unit testing
- Robert Campbell (robcee) or Robert Sayrer (sayrer)
- Embedding/docshell

[…] And now, we approach the point of this post. Benjamin announced our new arrival in his blog earlier this weekend, and his friends and co-workers offered their congratulations. I’m glad that they are happy for us, and I appreciate their good wishes. Here’s what I don’t understand. The comments express joy that now there is a new hacker for Mozilla. Now, there is a boy to continue his father’s work. What are my girls, chop suey? My girls are brilliant. My 2.5 year old is nearly able to read, my 1.5 year old speaks in complete sentences, and my 11 month old can say about a dozen words and work a doorknob. Why aren’t they qualified to do computer programming? Even I passed programming 101 in college, female that I am. I may not be a hacker, but I could do it at one point – I just thought programming was boring. Let this not be a comment on the ability of a woman to have intellectual pursuits – I can do calculus in multiple dimensions AND raise 4 children 2 and under. So down with hacker sexism – I know Micah will succeed in every venue he participates in, and so will my girls, regardless of what may be in their little diapers now. […]

Congratulations! And yes, the girls have every bit as much of a chance of turning out be Mozilla hackers like their Dad. My first, a girl, still enjoys trains like her dad and grandfather. I’m not sure what sixteen will bring (she’s five now) but I’m going to enjoy her shared enthusiasm for as long as it lasts. We have a few operational steam locomotives here in the Pacific Northwest that are really exciting to go out and see and ride behind. My belief is this, you can be or do anything you put your mind to!
