XULRunner Updates

I’ve been busy, but I’ve got some good XULRunner announcements:

Hum hum… xulrunner 1.8.0.4 has been on the ftp since the beginning of June.
1.8.0.5, on the other hand, has been tagged for the while in the cvs, but not released…

How is this “news” any relevant ?

The link for xulmine on http://benjamin.smedbergs.us/xulrunner/ ought to point to xulmine.mozdev.org as the Mines extension at https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1049/ is actually unrelated.

Gerv, I believe there is an “Upload Requests” component in Bugzilla for the Mozilla Developer Center, in which dria (or someone else capable) can and will upload a file (to be used as an example) to the server, so that it can be used for live examples. (See for example, the XUL Tutorial hosted there.)

  4. Benjamin Smedberg Says:

XR 1.8.0.6 has been tagged also, but we don’t have the release bandwidth to do a release of XR for every Firefox 1.5.0.x. The delay was partly due to needing to find people to do smoketests, and personal delays on my part.

    Benjamin,

You mention that you don’t have the release bandwidth to do a XULRunner release for every Firefox release. I notice there is no XR 1.8.1 release yet (if I’m wrong, I’ll happily accept the correction, and a URL, please!) Without being disrespectful, it is clear you guys need help. I’m sure you guys are capable of doing the work involved, I don’t doubt your abilities for a second. What I mean is that you seem to need extra helping hands.

I want to help in any way I can with XULRunner development and/or testing. But I don’t know where to start.

I am a Java EE developer/engineer/architect with 10 years of experience. I also have C, C++, C#, CSS, Delphi/Turbo Pascal, DOM, (X)HTML, JS, PHP, Python, Ruby, Ruby on Rails, SQL, XML and XPath experience and know some bash scripting as well. But the bulk of my experience has been Java GUI and server-side Java EE, B2B integration, that kind of stuff.

What I’m trying to say is that I’m not a beginner at software development, but I might need some time before I can be of help in some of the hardcore development tasks. But I can and will help in anything within reach of my current skills, with an eye to improving said skills so that I can be of more help as time goes on. I want to help get XR 1.8.1 out soon and help further 1.8.1.x releases to be timely. And of course, XR 1.9 is very important for the FF 3 release schedule (or so I’ve read on the XR roadmap. LOL. Didn’t mean to sound preachy.)

I can help test XR 1.8.1 or XR 1.9a1 nightlies or whatever for Linux x86 and x64, Mac OS X G4, and Windows 32-bit. But I definitely need some direction, as I have no idea where to begin. I think I have the skills to help somewhere, but I’m not certain to what extent. I mean, what do I do besides downloading and installing nightlies and trying some of the tutorials and the XR example apps that are listed on dev.moz.org? How do I build XR from source? Where are the unit tests and test cases? What’s a smoketest?

In short, what can I do to help and how/where do I start? :-D

I’ll try connecting to #xulrunner on irc.mozilla.org in the afternoon (PST) of Nov 30. In the meantime, feel free to contact me at pjcabrera at pobox dawt com if you have any thoughts, direction, etc. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Found Build Documentation on dev.moz.org. Will start reading once I get back from my morning jog. :-)
