MacOS 10.5 “Spaces” Question
I’ve seen articles about the new “Places” feature in MacOS 10.5. I’ve even seen videos. But I still have one question that is make-or-break for me: is this per-window or per-app? Can I put one Firefox window in my “communcation” place and one in my “development” place? If not, this feature is worthless.
Of course, the most annoying thing about MacOS in general is how app-centric it is. I don’t usually care what application a window belongs to: I care what logical task it belongs to. This is one of the reasons I still find the Windows desktop most usable, for all of its flaws.

Yes it is per-window (and it’s called Spaces). You can go into the 4-pane mode and freely move windows around between the 4 spaces.

Is this just like Gnome’s workspaces? Or is it something different?

In other words it’s an obvious clone of virtual desktops as have existed on UNIX stuff for yonks (note: this is not a bad thing, the worst thing in UI anywhere is a not invented here attitude). Good work for apple to pick up this almost compensation for not having multiple monitors!

Why does everyone assume that this was first invented on Unix ? I remember that I saw it first on an Apollo Domain/OS in the late 80’s, before X Windows existed. But the first implementation was on an Amiga in 1985. And then on the Mac (Stepping Out) in 1986.

Apple doesn’t invent anything, just repackages technologies for retards. (btw, “Time Machine” = backup with SVN, with some animation for droolers)

Backup with rsync*, probably, not SVN. And if by ‘retards’ you mean, ‘99% of the population’, then yes, I agree completely.
