{"id":301,"date":"2008-11-26T16:31:32","date_gmt":"2008-11-26T20:31:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/benjamin.smedbergs.us\/blog\/?p=301"},"modified":"2009-04-14T16:35:22","modified_gmt":"2009-04-14T20:35:22","slug":"woman-accused-of-stealing-mice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/benjamin.smedbergs.us\/blog\/2008-11-26\/woman-accused-of-stealing-mice\/","title":{"rendered":"Woman accused of stealing mice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Seen in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tribune-democrat.com\/local\/local_story_330231147.html\">today&#8217;s local paper<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>A Johnstown woman was jailed after authorities said she tried to steal several small animals from a local pet store.<\/p>\n<p>City police said Jennifer Lauren Jury, 42, of Broad Street, entered Animal Jack&#8217;s Pet Shop on Fifth Street on Monday and made her way to the second floor.<\/p>\n<p>As Jury came downstairs and tried to leave the store, an employee noticed three hamsters and two mice in her purse.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I could see them crawling out of her purse,&#8221; the employee said.<\/p>\n<p>When the employee confronted her, Jury took the animals out of her purse and left the store, police said.<\/p>\n<p>Jury was found at her residence, where police said she admitted she had been arrested for retail theft twice before.<\/p>\n<p>Jury was charged with retail theft and arraigned by District Judge Michael Musulin of Johstown. She was sent to the Cambria County Prison after failing to post $5,000 bond.<\/p>\n<p>The hamsters and mice were valued at $4, police said.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The story prompts numerous thoughts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Why was she held on $5,000 bond for a $4 stealing misdemeanor?\n<li>Why did the paper bother writing this up at all, especially as a real news story?\n<li>Why are there so many one-sentence paragraphs?
